How to Pass a Numerical Reasoning Test Without Rushing
Numerical reasoning is rarely about advanced maths. It is about choosing the right calculation, using the figures shown and staying accurate when the clock is visible.
What a numerical reasoning test actually measures
Most recruitment tests use ordinary workplace maths: percentages, ratios, averages, currency, rates and information taken from tables or charts. The real skill is deciding what the question is asking before touching the calculator. Oxford Careers describes numerical tests as one of the main forms of ability assessment used alongside verbal and abstract reasoning.[1]
That distinction matters. A candidate who knows every formula can still lose marks by using the wrong row, comparing the wrong years or calculating a percentage of the wrong base value.
Use a three-line method
For each question, write or think through three short lines: what you need, what figures you have, and what operation connects them. It feels slower for the first few questions. In practice it prevents the backtracking that wastes far more time.
- Need: the exact value or comparison requested.
- Have: the relevant figures, units and time period.
- Do: the calculation, followed by a quick sense check.
The mistakes that cost easy marks
Percentage change is the classic example. The change is divided by the original value, not the new value. A rise from 80 to 100 is 20 divided by 80, which is 25 per cent. It is not 20 per cent.
Units cause just as much trouble. A table may show figures in thousands while the answer choices use full pounds. A rate may be per month while the question asks for a year. Circle or mentally repeat the unit before calculating.
- Using the new figure as the base for percentage change.
- Reading across the wrong row or column.
- Ignoring thousands, millions, hours or months.
- Rounding halfway through a calculation.
- Assuming every number in the question must be used.
How to manage the clock
Do not divide the total time into a rigid allowance and panic when one question runs long. Use the average as a warning light. If you are still deciding what calculation to perform after roughly a minute, make your best choice, flag the item if the platform allows it, and move on.
Practise with a calculator similar to the one allowed in the real assessment. The Open University also recommends becoming familiar with the test format and instructions before the live attempt. Familiarity removes avoidable friction.[2]
A sensible seven-day practice plan
Spend the first two days finding your weak operations, not chasing a score. Use days three and four for focused sets on those weaknesses. On days five and six, complete mixed timed questions. On the final day, do one realistic run, review it properly, then stop. Last-minute cramming usually creates fatigue rather than accuracy.

Can I use a calculator in a numerical reasoning test?
It depends on the test provider and employer. Read the invitation and instructions carefully. If a calculator is allowed, practise using one rather than relying on mental arithmetic alone.
