The five answer modes
Drawing inferences
Judge how strongly the statement is supported by the information given. Distinguish certainty from probability, and use Insufficient data when the passage does not settle the point.
Recognising assumptions
Decide whether the statement depends on the proposed assumption. Do not ask whether the assumption is sensible; ask whether the original statement needs it to work.
Deduction
Use only the facts supplied. A conclusion follows only when it must be true from those facts, not when it merely sounds likely or reasonable.
Interpretation
Decide whether the conclusion is warranted by the evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. Stay close to the information given and avoid adding extra claims.
Evaluating arguments
Judge whether the argument is both relevant to the question and important enough to carry real weight. Ignore whether you personally agree with the conclusion.
