What to prepare for
Online application
The NAO reviews applications against its minimum eligibility requirements.
Stage 1 – Capptivate and numerical reasoning
The NAO describes Capptivate, from Cappfinity, as an interactive assessment of workplace scenarios and questions. The numerical reasoning test is not time-limited, but the time you take is recorded, and a practice test is recommended.
Stage 2 – Job simulation
Interactive role-based exercises with written and video responses, assessing judgement, analysis, communication and decision-making.
Stage 3 – Assessment centre
In London Victoria or Newcastle (some virtual): a group exercise, role play, skills-based interview and reflection exercise, with feedback for all attendees.
Public audit practice focus
Our sample trains value-for-money unit costs, budget variance and overpayment arithmetic in an untimed style, plus professional scepticism.
