Abstract Reasoning Tests: A Practical Pattern-Solving Guide
Abstract reasoning questions ask you to infer a rule from unfamiliar shapes or symbols. A repeatable scan—count, position, movement, rotation, shading and combination—works better than waiting for a pattern to jump out.
What is an abstract reasoning test?
An abstract reasoning test presents information through shapes, diagrams or symbols rather than ordinary prose or workplace data. You may need to complete a sequence, identify the odd item, match two transformations or determine what belongs in a missing grid cell.
Oxford Careers groups abstract reasoning with verbal and numerical ability tests. These assessments are normally timed and reward both speed and accuracy; they are not general-knowledge quizzes.[1]
Use a fixed rule scan
Start with the simplest visible feature and test one hypothesis at a time. If a rule explains only two frames but fails on the third, discard it. A reliable answer must account for every relevant change, including the missing position.
- Count: shapes, sides, dots, intersections or enclosed spaces.
- Position: left/right, inside/outside, corners, rows or columns.
- Movement: clockwise, alternating, jumping or returning to a start point.
- Rotation and reflection: note both direction and number of degrees.
- Appearance: colour, fill, line style, size or orientation.
- Combination: addition, subtraction, overlap or an exclusive-or rule between panels.
Separate simultaneous rules
A difficult sequence often contains two independent changes. A triangle may rotate clockwise while a dot alternates between filled and hollow. Track each feature separately before combining them. Trying to describe the whole image in one sentence creates unnecessary mental load.
In matrices, compare across rows and down columns. Look for the same relationship in more than one line. If the first two shapes combine to produce the third in the top row, check whether that operation also explains the middle row before applying it to the missing cell.
Improve without memorising answers
Practise untimed until you can name the rule precisely, then introduce a clock. Record whether each error came from missing a feature, accepting a partial rule, applying the right rule incorrectly or spending too long on one item. That diagnosis tells you what to change next.
The Open University recommends becoming familiar with relevant assessment formats, working quickly while maintaining accuracy and leaving harder questions until later when the test permits it.[2]
