Deductive Reasoning Tests: Conclusions That Must Follow
Deductive reasoning starts with stated rules or facts and asks what must follow. The safest method is to use only the information provided, test the conclusion against every condition and reject answers that merely could be true.
What deduction measures
A deductive test gives you premises, constraints or a rule and asks which conclusion follows. The content may be verbal, diagrammatic or based on scheduling and ordering. You do not need to agree that the premise is realistic; you need to reason correctly from it.
SHL describes deductive reasoning as drawing logical conclusions from provided information, identifying strengths and weaknesses in arguments and completing scenarios when some information is incomplete.[1]
Must be true is stricter than could be true
Suppose every approved request has a reference number, and request K has no reference number. You may conclude that K is not approved. But if the premise only says some approved requests have reference numbers, that conclusion is no longer guaranteed. Small words such as every, some, only and unless carry the logic.
For each answer, try to construct a counterexample that still obeys the premises. If you can, the conclusion does not have to follow. This is faster and safer than choosing the option that sounds most sensible in ordinary life.
Translate rules into constraints
Rewrite long rules into short statements. ‘The review happens after testing but before release’ becomes testing < review < release. ‘Only managers can approve refunds’ means approval implies manager status; it does not mean every manager approves refunds.
- Separate facts from conclusions before reading the options.
- Mark universal and conditional words explicitly.
- Combine rules one link at a time instead of making a large mental leap.
- Check whether the answer reverses a one-way rule.
- Use a table or ordering line when several people, days or conditions interact.
Build accuracy under time pressure
Untimed practice should focus on proving the answer. Timed practice should focus on recognising the question type quickly and choosing an economical representation. Review false positives—answers you selected because they seemed likely—as carefully as calculation mistakes.
Ability tests are commonly timed and may be designed so that few candidates finish every item. Oxford Careers advises working quickly and accurately rather than assuming you must reach the final question at any cost.[2]
